It identifies who you are, your rank, who you work for, and where you belong. Sometimes, all of these things simultaneously.
While taking a break from their live fire training, the Salem Fire Academy 2016-2 recruits paid a visit to the Oregon Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial at DPSST. Inscribed on the wall is the name of Floyd McMullen, who died in the Line of Duty on April 25, 1935 at a fire at the Oregon State Capitol. He is Salem Fire Department's only LODD.
As much as I like photographing landscapes, abstracts, etc., I also enjoy a quick pic around work when I have a free moment. Such is the case with Ladder 11 here. Even though she's a reserve now, this 105' Pierce aerial still has it. I'm hopeful that someday we'll be able to re-open this West Salem fire station.
I spent my Thursday helping out the Salem Police Department's SWAT team with their training exercise in the Wilamette National Forest. Here are two Salem Fire Dept SWAT Medics, Dave Brown (c) and Luke Barr (r), along with a Life Flight crew member, as they prepare to transport an officer who was "wounded".
This is our Heavy Rescue at Salem FD. It's one of the specialized pieces of apparatus we have, and is operated by our Technical Rescue Team. It was originally built to be Engine 4, but has since been converted into a rescue. The personnel and equipment on this truck are used to respond to emergencies that are complex and technical in nature, including: Confined Space, Trench, Structural Collapse, Vehicle & Machinery, and High-Angle/Rope Rescues. On this particular day in June they are training with our Hazardous Materials team on rescuing injured workers at a high angle/confined space incident.

When you consider that FDNY Station 10 sits only 270 feet from what was once the corner of the South Tower, it's remarkable that it is "Still Standing". I snapped this candid photo of a couple of FDNY and NYPD members looking for some relief on a particularly hot July during one of my trips to NYC.FDNY TEN HOUSE - When you consider that FDNY Station 10 sits only 270 feet from the corner of what once was the South Tower, it's remarkable that it is "Still Standing".
